In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
WHAT is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization in Mexico, or commonly known as IVF, is a special medical technique used to help a woman become pregnant. IVF can help couples that suffer from:
* Endometriosis
* Fallopian tube blockages or other damage
* Low sperm count
* Low sperm motility
* Unknown infertility
The process consists of joining a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm in a laboratory dish. In vitro means “outside the body”, and fertilization means the sperm has attached to and entered the egg. If this process is successful, it is then combined with the embryo transfer, which is physically placing the embryo into the uterus. IVF in Mexico is the most common form of assisted reproductive technology (ART). In fact, 99 percent of ART pregnancies are the result of IVF treatment in Mexico. It has been successfully used since 1978, and is most often tried when other, less expensive fertility techniques have failed.
TREATMENT STAGES:
The IVF procedure consists of three main steps, which are completed over a
period of about a month:
1. Egg and sperm recovery
2. Fertilization
3. Embryo Transfer
Egg and sperm collection: Prior to treatment, fertility medications are prescribed to induce ovulation and stimulate the ovaries to increase the chance of collecting multiple eggs. This is often referred to as, Ovulation Induction. Once the follicles have ripened and are ready to be induced to ovulate, a hormone injection is given to trigger the final maturation process of the eggs. The egg recovery wil be performed 36 hours after the hormone injection and sperm from the male is also collected on that same day. The sperm retrieved is separated from semen, washed and spun before individual healthy sperm are selected. Once the eggs are ready for collection they are removed individually from the ovaries.
Fertilization: In the insemination process, sperm and eggs are placed in incubators in the laboratory which enables fertilization to occur. In some cases where fertilization may be low, Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used. Through this procedure, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg in an attempt to achieve fertilization. The eggs are monitored to confirm fertilization and cell division are taking place. Once this occurs, the fertilized eggs are considered embryos.
Embryo Transfer: The embryos are usually transferred into the woman’s uterus anywhere from one to six days later, but most commonlyit occurs between two to three days following egg retrieval. At this point, the fertilized egg has divided to become an embryo. Embryos are then suspended in fluid and gently placed through a catheter into the womb. This process is often guided by ultrasound and is usually painless, but some women experience a little discomfort. These steps are followed by rest and watching for early pregnancy symptoms. A blood test would be used to determine if pregnancy has occurred.
